Artist Statement
My sculptures express my interest in relationships and unity. I am moved to convey experiences that are shared and recognize our interconnection. The figures in my sculptures often blend, balance on each other, and reflect each other to represent both independence and mutual reliance.
I utilize content that welcomes personal interpretation. My work often depicts experiences that are reflections of each other: strength and vulnerability, doubting and trusting, observation and introspection. There is often a muted sensuality in my work that relates to the tactile and intimate.
Recently I have started to incorporate symbols, such as the heart, hand and boat as universal symbols. I use symbols such as these to speak of humanity, individuality and the journey of life.
My work is slab constructed and completely hand carved. Many of my sculptures have a crackle finish which arises in the firing process. I favor surface treatments that are integral to the building process or are created during the firing process and are somewhat random. I feel this imparts them with a sense of history.
I am moved when delicacy and strength unites with the earthy, and it is my desire to express that beauty in my work.
