Artist Statement

My sculptures express my interest in relationships and unity. The figures in my sculptures blend, balance on each other and reflect each other to represent both independence and mutual reliance. My work often depicts experiences that are reflections of each other: strength and vulnerability, doubting and trusting, observation and introspection.

Porcelain figures have a strong historical connection to delicacy and grace. I seek to reference this context while also expressing strength and utilizing relational content that welcomes interpretation. There is often a muted sensuality in my work that relates to the tactile and intimate.

My work is completely hand carved. I favor surface treatments that allow for a controlled level of randomness or are integral to the building process. Many of my sculptures have a crackle finish which arises from the firing process. Recently, I've started to explore other finishes such as marbleizing colored porcelain to create surfaces reminiscent of stone.

Strength and delicacy can reside beautifully within the same form. I am moved when grace unites with the earthy, and it is my desire to express that beauty in my work.
